RBC transfer limits: US guide

Alexis Konovodoff

The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is one of Canada’s largest banks. Of the millions of Canadians who hold money with RBC, many need to transfer money across borders, whether to the other side of the world or just the next town.

So what are RBC’s transfer limits? How can you transfer money with RBC? Are transfer limits different between the US and Canada versus other countries?

This article will guide you through RBC transfer limits for the variety of banking services that RBC customers use. It’s easy to view — and possibly change — your daily RBC transfer limit online or over the phone.

RBC Interac e-Transfer limits

If you have an account with RBC in Canada, you can exchange money with other Canadians via Interac e-Transfer. This service is faster and easier than a wire transfer or ACH, and it’s free.

As long as your identity is verified in online banking, your RBC Interac e-Transfer limit is 10,000 CAD per day

Remember, you can only use Interac e-Transfer between two Canadian bank accounts.

If you’ve already sent money on the RBC mobile app during the day, you might run into a daily RBC e-transfer limit.⁵ If you’re sending money through multiple methods, check your daily limit online or in the mobile app and call RBC if you want it adjusted.

RBC international transfer limits

There are two ways to send money overseas with RBC: International Money Transfer and international wire transfer.

International Money Transfer

RBC offers most of its members a service called International Money Transfer, which allows you to send money quickly to more than 200 countries with no fees.³ (While the service is free, RBC charges a markup on the exchange rate.)

The RBC International Money Transfer limit is 50,000 CAD per day. The minimum transfer is 100 CAD. You can access this service with online banking or the RBC mobile app.³

🚨 Unfortunately, International Money Transfer is unavailable to US bank accounts and other RBC foreign currency accounts.

International Wire Transfer

Like most banks, RBC will work with you to arrange an international wire transfer if that’s how you want to move your money.

To send an amount that exceeds the RBC International Money Transfer limit, an international wire transfer might be a good option. There is no clearly defined RBC wire transfer limit that applies across all accounts, neither for domestic nor international wire transfers.

Still, if you’re moving a lot of money out of your RBC account, check your daily limits on the mobile app and call if you need to exceed them.

While they are a reliable and ubiquitous money transfer method, international wire transfers are slow and expensive compared to most other options.

Things to keep in mind when transferring high amounts

Before making a large transfer, it always helps to call ahead. When you’re moving high amounts of money, the effort and potential cost involved in undoing a mistake is too big to risk.

It’s also important not to rush a large transfer. When you have time to check all the details as carefully as possible and wait for the payment to go through, you’ll be more likely to get things right the first time.

RBC customers can easily send money between Canadian accounts; they can open USD bank accounts without a US address and conveniently bank across the border, and they can send money overseas without an up-front fee.

They only have to watch out for the RBC transfer limits, which vary with each payment method. But each RBC transfer limit applies just for the day, and customers can change them online or over the phone.

However, RBC customers should pay attention to the markup that RBC uses to calculate their exchange rate.

With Wise, you can send secure and trackable large amount transfers to 140+ countries worldwide with transparent fees and the fair mid-market exchange rate.
