Heading to the Land of Smiles? You’ll be able to find great food, hospitable folks and plenty to see and do. Travelling around the capital, Bangkok, is also a breeze, with the overhead BTS Skytrain and underground MRT networks covering most tourist areas.

What is the Rabbit card in Bangkok?

The Rabbit card is a contactless stored-value card that’s similar to Singapore’s EZ-Link card or London’s Oyster Card. It can be used for fare payments on BTS Skytrains and the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) as well as for the MRT Yellow Line and MRT Pink Line in Bangkok. The card can also be used for payments at many retail stores such as Boost Juice Bar, Koi The, Starbucks, Pepper Lunch, McDonalds and more².

Unfortunately, there’s no BTS Rabbit card for tourists, but for foreigners who want to get a Rabbit card immediately after landing instead of at a BTS station, there are options to buy a card via Klook³ and collect it at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) or Central World.

Bangkok Rabbit card price

Rabbit cards cost 200 THB, which includes a 100 THB issuing fee and 100 THB in stored value⁴. Once you’re done with your travels, you can either choose to keep the Rabbit card, or return it for an immediate refund if the stored value and deposit for the card is less than 250 THB. If the total exceeds 250 THB, a deferred refund will need to be applied for, with the funds only being released after 15 days.

Where to buy a Rabbit card in Bangkok?

If you’re wondering where to buy a Rabbit card in Bangkok, the card is available at all BTS ticket offices, BRT stations, Rabbit Service Centers and at MRT Yellow Line and MRT Pink Line stations⁵. Remember to bring your passport for identification before your Rabbit card can be issued.

How to use the Rabbit card in Bangkok?

As mentioned, the Rabbit card can be used for fare payments on the BTS Skytrain, BRT buses, the MRT Yellow Line and the MRT Pink Line. Cards can be topped up at any BTS Ticket Office or authorised top up service providers, and they simply need to be held over the entry or exit readers until a beep is heard. Remember to tap in and out to be charged the correct fare.

Can I use Rabbit card for MRT in Bangkok

Unfortunately, the Rabbit card cannot be used at most MRT lines in Bangkok, with the exception of the MRT Yellow Line and MRT Pink Line. There is a separate MRT Card for use on the MRT Blue Line and MRT Purple line, but it’s also possible to pay for fares on those lines by tapping a Visa or Mastercard credit card⁶.

Rabbit card balance check

You can check your Rabbit card balance at all Rabbit Service Providers that accept the Rabbit card for payment, including BTS Ticket Offices. You can choose to do it yourself at one of the top-up machines, or hand it to a staff member at the booth to do a quick balance check on your Rabbit card.

Where to top-up Rabbit card

The Rabbit card can be topped up at any BTS Ticket Office, as well as at authorised top-up service providers such as Inthanin Coffee, Susco, McDonalds, Lawson 108 and more⁷. Different machines at the ticket offices accept different modes of payment, so do remember to use the right one to top-up your card.

Bangkok Rabbit card expiry

The Rabbit card expiry date is 7 years from the date of issue, but any stored value in the card will be frozen after 2 years from the date of the last transaction. If you wish to access the frozen stored value in that card and assuming it hasn’t expired yet, you’ll need to top up the card to be able to use the frozen stored value inside.

Pay for shopping, food and more in Bangkok with the Wise card
