What is Gojek?

Gojek was founded in 2010 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and is now a leading platform in Southeast Asia for ride hailing, food delivery and other services.

If you’re planning a trip to Bali, the chances are that the Gojek services you’ll use the most will be GoRide, GoCar, and GoBluebird. These offer ride hailing services for a motorbike (GoRide), car (GoCar) or taxi (GoBluebird).

Aside from this, Gojek also have other services including:

  • GoFood for food delivery
  • GoMart or GoShop for grocery shopping and delivery
  • GoSend or GoBox for transporting parcels or boxes, or even moving house
  • Financial services and bill payments through GoTagihan

This guide focuses on Gojek Bali for ride hailing, but if you’re downloading the app you may also want to explore the other handy features to make the most of your stay in Indonesia.

Is Gojek safe in Bali?

Before we move onto how Gojek works, let’s start with the most important question: is Gojek safe in Bali?

Gojek offers ride hailing services, much like a provider like Uber. This allows you to book a ride with assurance of the cost before you get into the vehicle, and share your personal location with others for safety as you travel. All in all this can be safer than using taxis, and removes the issue of drivers taking you a circuitous route to get a higher fare, or demanding an unreasonable fee. If you’re unlucky enough to experience any issues with your ride you can report the incident to Gojek who will investigate and take action as appropriate.

How to use Gojek in Bali: Step by step guide

To use Gojek in Bali you’ll need to download the app, choose a payment method and book your ride. This process is usually extremely simple to do - but if you’re planning on taking a Gojek right from the airport when you arrive, you may want to get the app on your phone prior to leaving Australia.

Here’s how to set up your account to use Gojek in Bali more conveniently when you arrive:

  1. Download the app from the Apple Store² or Google Play³
  2. Click sign up and enter your phone number when prompted, including country code
  3. You’ll be sent a OTP by text message, which you use to register your account
  4. Enter the OTP to be directed to the Gojek home page - you’re ready to start using the app

Once you’ve got the app set up on your phone, you can order a ride by taking the following steps⁴

  1. Go to the Gojek app homepage and choose GoRide
  2. Enter your destination and pickup location
  3. Select your preferred payment method
  4. Select 'Book GoRide' to make an order
  5. Go to the pickup location to wait for your driver
  6. After your ride you’re prompted to rate the driver and can choose to add a tip

You’ll have a choice of ways to pay for a ride with Gojek, including cash or adding a card. Using cash can be a hassle as drivers may not have small notes in change, so you might struggle until you break a few notes. Using a linked card is a more convenient option - we’ll cover how to add your card in a moment. Even if you pay with a card, you can choose to add a tip for the drive after your ride, based on the service you receive - this is always appreciated by drivers.

Paying for Gojek in Bali

Paying for your GoRide, GoCar, or GoBluebird with a credit or debit card can be far more convenient than relying on cash. To use a card with Gojek, you have to link it to your account first. Here’s how⁵:

  1. Click [⋮] on the payment method bar
  2. Select ‘Add’ on Credit or debit card menu
  3. Enter your Card Number, Expiry date, CVV, and your card name
  4. Click 'Save Card'

When you order a ride you can then select the linked card as your payment method. You’ll be billed for your ride in IDR, so it’s worth checking what your bank charges you for foreign currency transactions. Many Australian banks have a foreign transaction charge of about 3% which applies every time you spend overseas, often coupled with an unfavourable exchange rate. This can mean your rides cost you more AUD than you expect. As a great alternative use your Wise card with Gojek, to get the mid-market rate and low fees - with no foreign transaction charge to worry about.

How much does Gojek cost in Bali?

Gojek works on a dynamic pricing model, which means the price of a journey can vary a lot depending on demand and other factors. This means that it’s not possible to fully predict what your journey will cost you until you book it - but using a ride hailing service can still usually be cheaper than a taxi.

Surge pricing is most likely at peak times, or overnight. If there’s rain and many people want to use the service there’s also a good chance fares will go up.

Using Gojek from Bali Airport

If you’ve just touched down you might be wondering: can you get Gojek from Bali airport?

The good news is that your Gojek Bali airport trip is super easy. The booking process is similar to that described above, and there are several pick up locations called ‘Instant Points’ which have Gojek staff on hand to help travellers find their car. Here’s how to book Gojek from Bali airport⁶:

  1. Open the Gojek app and tap GoCar
  2. Enter your destination and the terminal you’re in. If you’re flying internationally, you’re most likely landing at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport.
  3. After ensuring that the Instant Point is correct, tap the green button.
  4. Click "Book" to book the car and see directions to the selected Instant Point
  5. Head to the Instant Point

At the Instant Point ground staff will assist you with finding your car - just show them the booking in your app.

Tips for using Gojek in Bali

To help you settle in here are a few extra tips for using Gojek in Bali:

  • Look out for promo codes on the Gojek app
  • Use all the available safety features - ask for a helmet if you’re taking a motorcycle for example
  • Traffic in Bali can be very heavy at peak times - give yourself lots of time for any journey
  • Download Grab as an alternative so you can look whether Gojek or Grab in Bali is best for your specific journeys
  • Use your Wise card to pay in IDR with low fees and the mid-market rate

Bali Gojek area coverage

Gojek has good coverage in many areas of Bali - but it’s good to know that there are some less populated areas, such as Northern Bali, where getting a car will be tricky, or even impossible.

You should be fine in the popular beach areas, like Seminyak, Kuta, and Canggu for example, and also in the city area of Denpasar and closer to the airport in Nusa Dua. As a super popular tourist location Ubud is also usually very well covered. The main issues finding a Grab are in the more remote points of Bali, including the islands like the Gili Islands, and the furthest beaches from the airport, which don’t see so many tourists.

Locals also warn about some “no ride sharing zones” where taxi companies prevent Gojek and similar services from operating. If you see signs stating you're in a no ride sharing area, you’ll need to walk a little out of the immediate location to get a driver to accept your booking.

Here’s a quick summary:

AreaGojek coverage
Seminyak, Kuta, Canggu, Jimbaran, Denpasar, Nusa Dua, Sanur, Ubud, UluwatuGreat coverage - cars arrive quickly
Sidemen, LovinaAdequate coverage - expect to wait
Nusa Islands, Gili Islands, Amed, Pemuteran, Medewi, Padangbai HarbourPoor or no coverage - find an alternative

Getting around in Bali - ride-hailing apps and alternatives

Gojek in Bali is a great way to get around safely and efficiently. It’s good to know that there are several different options for getting around in Bali. Grab is a good alternative to compare journey costs - neither is cheaper or more expensive overall, so comparing both on journey cost and driver availability and then deciding which to book is a good tactic.

You can also use traditional taxis in Bali - although these are often more expensive than ride hailing services. Or, for full flexibility look into booking a driver and card for a day, which hotels are often able to help with. This can be better for out of the way trips to places like Northern Bali.
